Yes! And when these screens are designed to make it difficult to enforce rules or even see what's happening, many parents give up. I'd like to share some tools I've found for this. By default, these devices are all or nothing; but my favorite approach is to start with everything blocked and allow just one app. Could be Music, or FaceTime. And as they get older, we can allow more uses when they are needed.

1. Screenable. This allows parents to transform a regular iPhone into a dumb phone.

2. Gertrude for macOS. These are the best parental controls I've found for MacBook.

3. LivingRoom for iOS. Let's you see how the device is used in order to enforce house rules. (Full disclosure: I built this one)

I am in my mid 70's/ When I was a kid I read under the covers uing a flaslight. My father did the same. His father did not - they didn't have flashlights then, or he would have.

I gave my son a kindle - and he read it under the covers. I controlled his actiive screens - phone and computer, but I figured that an e-paper reader was fine. It is equivalent to reading paper, which has been going on for generations.
